There's an alternative to hard wiring behind the dash. I opened the switch and soldered a jumper wire between pin #7 (power in from fuse 29) to pin #4. You can jump it to any pin other than #1 (ground). I did this 8 months ago, and my instrument lights have been full bright ever since.
