Over last weekend I went up to look, and sure enough, there was an old hose at the top of the filler neck, leading from the vent next to the fuel cap over to a valve on the main filler neck. This had gotten brittle and snapped in half. I believe this is the hose others have described in the responses below -- thanks to all!
And sure enough, a length of standard 5/16" fuel line from Pep Boys and a couple of hose clamps, and all was well.
If someone else is looking at this thread wondering if this is their issue, know that the hose in question forms a loop -- almost complete circle -- from a nipple on the back of the fuel door assembly, around to the valve located on the filler neck. This car's had snapped in the middle, either because it was just old and brittle, or maybe a stone got thrown up and broke it.
As a bonus, while in there looking around, I noticed the rear brake pads were nearly gone. Happened to have a set of rotors and pads on hand, so tackled that job too!
