Steering column clamshell screws Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Fri, 9 Jun 2017 18:04:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The procedure for removing the lower portion of the clamshell is already documented on this board so I won't repeat it.
Most or all who have written about it have commented that the screws are different, but details are lacking. It helps to know what you're dealing with when you do this chore.
All 4 screws have Torx heads. The 2 screws on the left (nearest the driver's door) have T20 heads. The other 2 screws have T25 heads.
The 2 screws on the left are identical. They're the longest of the 4 screws, and they're the type of screw that's made for plastic fittings.
The screw in the middle (near the steering column adjusting lever) and the screw on the right are machine screws. The middle screw is shorter than the screw on the right.
This is what I found on my '96 9000. The clamshell was taken apart before I bought the car by a local indy who I hope returned all the screws where they're supposed to go.
