Best option for axle replacement? Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Tue, 18 Jul 2017 16:42:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The ongoing project of replacing the transmission in my '97 CSE has been one of finding more and more things that need to be taken care of before the car can be buttoned up and road-tested.
The outer boot on the driver side axle is toast. Figured I'd just replace the boots since the CV joint itself seems OK, but then found that lots of needle bearings had been lost from the inner joint.
Eeuroparts is out of stock on aftermarket axles, with no expected arrival date. OEM Saab axles show as "overdue by 4 days" and are prohibitively expensive. They also list the inner CV spiders available, but once again are quite expensive and out of stock.
NAPA has a reasonably-priced reman available. For about the same price, Advance Auto Parts has a new "Heri" brand axle. (Chinese-made no doubt.) However, searching the board here there are warnings of fitment problems with axles from chains like NAPA, Autozone, etc. Rockauto shows a new closeout "DSS" axle for cheap, as well as a Cardone rebuilt unit. (The latter requires a core to be shipped back, which I'm trying to avoid.)
The time to take care of this axle is now, while the subframe is still apart and it's easy to R&R. What is the best option at this point for replacement axles?
