Stumble and almost died in traffic jam Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:36:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 96 Aero 5-spd had been doing fine until lately. Every once in while when I would start the car it wouldn't idle correctly and would hunt up and down, stumble, almost stall and then smooth out after a minute or so. Last week it did it so bad it finally threw a code and the check engine light came on. Unfortunately, I had so much going on I didn't have time to throw the laptop at it and retrieve the code. Yesterday I was headed to the airport in Detroit to catch a plane home. Of course I was running late and got caught in a traffic jam on I-94 in Ypsilanti. As I was inching along (very hot day) the car started to stumble every time I started to let the clutch pedal out. It got increasingly worse and became a challenge to get the car moving w/o stalling. It did stall once, thankfully it restarted. It would idle OK but would almost die as soon as I applied any load to the engine. I had to barely apply the throttle to keep it from stalling. The traffic finally eased up and started moving. Once moving it would buck and go, buck and go and would continue, gaining a little speed each time it would go and lose a little each time it would buck. Fortunately for me, it was a net gain and I was able to get up to speed. After 10 or 15 minutes at speed the problem started going away and it behaved well the rest of the way to the airport. To me it seemed like some electronic component was getting hot and breaking down. My first thought is the DI. Does this sound like a DI problem? My thought is it got heat soaked in traffic and once I got moving and the engine bay cooled down some it was less aggravated. I have a spare DI in the back. When I get back, I'm hoping I don't hit traffic leaving Detroit and maybe it will play nice until I can pull the code. It does exhibit what I would call long cranking to start. It's been like that since I got it. TIA!
