I pulled the dash top and pulled out the instrument cluster/EDU, cleaned all the connectors with Deoxit and cleaned up the ground near the left speaker. It appears to be working OK now, and the engine is starting and running OK. (I don't know why this would have affected the engine but bad grounds do all kinds of wacky things.)
