Well, it looks like the problem with the EDU and engine cutting out on my '95 CSE is not fixed after all. The result this time was having to be towed home.
The car had been running fine for a few days after cleaning contacts and the ground under the dash so I thought the problem was licked. After stopping to get a bite to eat today though the symptoms returned. The EDU cut out and about five minutes later the engine stalled and would not start.
This time I observed things a little more closely. It started out with the EDU and clock lighting dimming but gauges and AC still working. Then the gauges would kick in and out for a while as the display got dimmer, then they stopped working altogether and the EDU and clock went black. Then several minutes later the engine started sputtering and stalled out. It restarted once and ran for about a minute and I was able to park. Then no start.
I pulled the fuse and relay panel down and noticed that when the ignition is turned on the fuel injection relay chatters. The chattering is fast at first then slows down and finally stops. Since so many of the other relays are the same I swapped them around but nothing changed. Fuses appear OK. Fuel pump runs when a jumper is connected between fuses 14 and 22.
The symptoms seem to indicate that key systems are seeing reduced voltage that gets progressively lower until failure occurs. Yet the battery stays fully charged, with things like the HVAC blower, lights, and remote key fob operating normally. I also recall that when I had this problem before when everything had apparently returned back to normal the battery did not need any special attention, the car just started right up.
I'll go through Ari's no-start checklist to see what that reveals, and I guess it's worth checking grounds under the hood. Does the brain trust here have any other ideas of what to look for?
