The last set I took out were only pitted on the friction surface against the rubber - no paint is going to do anything; anodizing perhaps. Grease will degrade the rubber and attract dirt. The others are saying they're observing structural failures; I've only ever seen salt corrosion and erosion/pitting like this last set.
