I tried a new 9-5 in 2001. Everything about that car was less than the 9000 Aero so I walked away and crossed that off my list of "cars I must own before I die". Fast forward to 2017 and I had a chance to catch a good dose of enthusiasm from my friend who "rescued" a 9-5 Aero wagon project ended by divorce. My 9000 Aero has over 400K on the clock. The prospect and the time of tearing down the engine and head this winter for total reliability this summer forced me to re-evaluate. I have owned four 900s, three were SPGs. Those cars had the most usable storage IMO when compared to the Aero. However, the Aero proved to be the better car travel wise and cost wise than the 900 model. Access to the load was also better in the Aero because of the four doors. I'm in sales. I carry lots of samples in boxes...everything that fit in the back of the Aero fits in the SportCombi its just configured differently. The load cover even lifts up and locks for a better view of the rear storage area. I have not yet folded down the back seats and loaded that area yet but, because it's a flat floor, there should be more usable space. The driving compartment is roomy (I'm 6' 6") and the view through the front glass is slightly improved over the Aero, IMO. The Dame Edna styling is not terribly great out of the can but google "Saab Dame Edna modified front bumper" for a look at images of an alternative take on that styling. I thought the SPG was ugly when I first saw it. The same for the 9000. I bought Saabs because of the high depreciation on a vehicle of great quality which I actually fit in. The Dame Edna "style" is growing on me. Cars evolve as do styles and use. Saabs are, however, such good deals that you could afford to change the "style" and the "tune" and create a car that matches your personality and needs for many years to come-after all if you are on the 9000 board you found a car, years ago, which was a good match. My opinion of the 2008 Dame Edna(a horrible but accurate description) Sportcombi: not yet perfect but it's as close to the Aero as I could get and, possibly, a better match for me as I age out over the next sixteen years of ownership. Given the choice of driving a similar mileage 9000 and the SportCombi - a choice I sort of have- I think I'm better off in the "new"ish 9-5. Hopefully, fellow 9000 owners, you revisit the "newer" 9-5, really take the time to wring out the auto manual box (it takes some time to "get" it), or go for the elusive manual. Then consider what upgraded shocks, tune, and a Saab 9-3 X front splitter would do to the car. I am keeping the 9000. I am keeping the SPG, I am keeping the Viggen. I am moving into a 9-5 affair. To do otherwise would just be.....................really expensive. No, strike that. It would be wrong just wrong.
