I've been adding 5 quarts which reaches the X in MAX on the dipstick. No oil related problems in over 140K miles.
This doesn't mean however that I've been filling it to maximum capacity. I've found 4 posts at Saabnet which clearly state that the amount to add at an oil and filter change is 5.4 quarts per the '97 owners manual. To be clear, that is 5.4 U.S. quarts, not imperial quarts. The same manual says 5.0 liters which is actually 5.3 quarts.
I think '94 - '98 owners with 2.3L engines can add up to 5.3 quarts or 5.0 liters with no worries about overfilling.
If it is true that oil additive chemistries can clash then because about 1 quart of old oil remains after a change one should choose a good brand and stay with it.
