Thanks for the tip, Simon.
Turned out the downpipe had completely separated from the flex pipe.
For those living in Massachusetts, I highly recommend Lou's Muffler in Waltham. The indie saab mechanic I go to wanted north of 1200 to replace my entire exhaust system with a factory unit.
Lou's does custom fabricating and welding, and they got me all set for 180 while I waited. Even took me under the car to show me their work.
