Definitely a good application for an impact gun, but if you don't have one and if the issue is not being able to get a good enough grip on the cam flats have you considered using a vice grip there? They might mar the surface of the cam flats but that shouldn't be a real issue and they should get the job done. Might be too late now, but could you also loosen the cam bolt with the timing chain still in place to help hold the cam?
