You are right, it's a pig of a job, you need small hands, which I don't have. Gets easier if you do it a few times, as you say
A few thoughts - yes, you do need the electrical connection. It isn't likely that it just fell off, because there is a connector plug that snaps into place. In fact, refitting it is the main problem when replacing the valve. I found a long pair of medical forceps that clicked on and held it firmly - very useful
You might like to check round the back of the cam cover to see that all the vacuum hoses are connected. Near the AIC valve (but behind it, if you get me) is a hose on a brass spigot that can come adrift. That can cause idling problems. It might click back into place but more likely you would need JB Weld or something similar to make it secure
A used valve is very cheap but of course might not work either. And make sure you get it the right way up! Finally, when cleaning the valve you might as well clean out all the gunk in the little hoses, though that's a really nasty, sticky job
