The lock on the front door to my house recently became very difficult to use, and any new key copies would not work. We have lived here for 18 years and didn't change it when we moved in - so it may be many decades old.
I took out the lock cylinder and brought it to a locksmith who confirmed that the brass pins/tumblers inside the cylinder were worn to somewhere between the standard increment dimensions for this lock (there is a key code indicating the length of each pin in the sequence). He installed new pins in a different pattern, made a few new keys, works fine now. Lock cylinders do wear out, particularly if not lubed regularly.
