There are two Coolant Temperature Sensors (CTS) on four cylinder 9000s:
1. One for the Engine Control Unit - located on the back of the cylinder head between intake runners for cylinders 2 and 3.
2. Another for the temperature gauge (and in the later cars the radiator fan control) - is screwed into the end of the cylinder head near the transmission.
The Intake Air Temperature sensor is screwed into and about half way up the pipe that connects the output side of the intercooler radiator and the throttle body - gives a reading of the temperature of the compressed (heated) air about to enter the engine. I believe that it has less control over the mixture than the CTS, but it is certainly worth cleaning off the tip if nothing else.
