voltage drop after driving

Maybe three years ago, I noticed my voltage dropping as I drove - creeping down into the low 13s. Tried replacing the voltage regulator but I bought the wrong one, and needed the car back on the road before the right part could arrive, so I cleaned and installed the old one and things got better. Mid 14v all day long.
I'm now getting 13.9v consistently at startup. Fine, no problem. Toward the end of my 30-minute nearly all highway-speed commute, it's hovering between 12.9 and 13.3v with occasional spikes back up to 13.9. Had a few few frightening instances of 12.5.
Basically, voltage readout is more erratic the longer I drive.
Even when controlling for engine fan running, things seem to get worse as the ambient temperature rises. I keep the AC off to avoid more strain on the system.
Voltmeter confirms the EDU readout is on target.
So, my question: could it be the alternator? VR more likely? funky heat-affected wiring?
Sub-question: I see 120A alternators available. I don't know what I have now, but what (if anything) might I need for this (presumed) upgrade?
