Our last 9000 ('93 Aero) was totaled, and so my wife and I were car shopping as well. We narrowed it down to the Toyota RAV4 and the Outback and settled on the latter. The RAV4 seemed harsh in comparison. Not that I don't like a firm ride - I have a Viggen. But the RAV4 seemed harsh for no apparent reason. We've never looked back after getting the Outback, a 2017 model. We got the extended warranty because of the AWD. It feels solidly connected to the road. It doesn't have the wild acceleration of a 9000 turbo or a Viggen, but I still enjoy driving it. It doesn't achieve the EPA rated gas mileage, in town or on the highway. Highway is around 27-28 mpg, town 23 mpg. That was a little disappointing. We got the 4-cyl engine. Used Outbacks aren't much of a savings, when you look at the prices. They retain their value well. So we bought new. Our first new car.
I drove a Forester a few years ago and didn't like how it cornered, or more specifically, how it didn't corner. The Crosstrek feels a little underbuilt for my tastes. I haven't driven other Subarus besides those.
