I still daily drive a 9000, but we bought a new Outback a couple of years ago (2017 model) for the wife when her Sonata was totalled. I don't think the 4WD system is a problem area on Subarus but we also got the extended warranty. Not only is the CVT insanely expensive to replace if it fails, all modern cars contain a lot of questionable technology that costs a small fortune to repair. (I can see in the future it may become completely uneconomical to own a late-model car that is out of warranty.)
The Outback feels solid and drives well but the 4-cylinder engine power is just adequate and the engine is noisy under acceleration. The CVT helps here because it can pick optimal ratios on the fly to make the best use of engine power. Gas mileage is good, maybe not quite up to the EPA tests, but close enough. Much better than the Sonata it replaced though that was a V6 so not a really fair comparison. We like that there are dedicated buttons for the HVAC system rather than relying on the touch screen. (The 2020 models are "all new" and will have a much bigger screen, but not sure if they're doing away with real buttons. That would be a deal-breaker for me.)
For myself I'd probably be looking for a 1st-gen 9-5 in good condition when the time comes.
