Yeah, that's the problem with old electronics, they die for no apparent reason. I've tried three different cruise control modules (a well-known failure item) in my car unsuccessfully.
Could be worse: my brother got rid of a nice 1990s BMW 325i because the ABS/antiskid module was powering the electronic throttle down randomly, thinking that the car was skidding. The dealer offered to replace the suspected part for $1300 (requires "marrying" to the main ECU) but with no guarantee that it would fix the problem. He still has his C900 convertible though.
