I did this a few weeks ago....
Jersey Saab definitely has some tips on this. :)
I can verify that this tool:

works. Though it may be an inch or two too big to be perfect....:
I was anxious about it enough that I actually bought a new circlip to test
saab [30551798] Lock Ring for like $7.00
just to verify that the tool I linked to would work. Having the new circlip (lock ring) on the bench I could test the pliers.
It was easier coming out than back in. I think a condition of the slightly too largeness of the 16" plier.... I found un-snapping the lock pliers to jostle the lock ring out of position.... a third hand holding a large screwdriver against the lockring allowed me to release tension and fit everything back and a few taps on the ring with screwdrive settled everything into place.
this was one a 96 with 220k miles and definitely first time.... so things were pretty crusty.
and yes! bevel side facing out (or rather towards you as you re-assemble)
