It depends on what you mean by "temperature sensing gauge". There's
a two level temperature sensing switch that screws into the bottom
(turbo side) of your radiator. That controls the hi/low speed of
your radiator fan. The sensor that controls the temperature gauge
is on your cylinder head. It has nothing to do with your radiator
fan, unlike later models which don't have the two speed fan switch
mounted in the radiator. If your radiator is clogged you should be
able to notice a temperature gradient simply by feeling (lay your
hand on the fins at various points, top and bottom) - mine was
once clogged, down by that same two-speed switch. My fan wouldn't
operate because the bottom 25% of the radiator had cooler, non-circulating fluid keeping the sensor below the minimum required to complete the
fan circuit. Many on this board feel that the thermostat, being a
relatively cheap item, that cycles on an off continuously, should be
changed every time you change/flush the coolant - i.e., every two
years or 30k miles. Just how warm is it running in the traffic, and
what's the ambient temperature?
