From mt experience during replacing the headliner:-
The wires for the dome light, the rear reading lights etc come up one (or possibly both) A pillars and 'spider web' out over the top of the headliner. My guess is in your case the wires go aft a little way then make a 90 degree turn to the left or the right before turning once more towards the front of the car and their conduit down the A pillars to the wiring harness. The wiring up there is probably how it was in my '88 - simply taped randomly to the ceiling with Swedish Duck tape.
Good luck,
Nick.
