I am about to replace the evaporator on my 91 9000 T. I have obtained a non-oem equivalent from Sobstory in NJ. I have some questions about this procedure.

This repair comes after numerous recharges and leak checks (r134a - thankfully), after which several different shops have not been able to detect a leak. The only part which could not be throughly checked without removal was the evaporator, so, on the recommendation of an a/c shop, I have decided to replace it.

My questions are:

1. Do I need to have the system completely evacuated before I start, or is there someway for me to release the refrigerant without hurting myself. There is at least a little r134a in the system since the compressor still turns.

2. Are there any shortcuts or things I should look out for doing this job. Does anyone have experience replacing the evaporator with a non-oem part.

3. When attaching the a/c hoses to the evaporator, do I need o-rings or any additional parts. The replacement evaporator that I have has the ends covered by blue plastic plugs and covered in shrink wrap, so I don't know if there are o-rings or such in there already.

4. Is there anything else that I need to know that I don't know to ask. I am planning on a professional recharge. I have already been in this area for a blower motor r&r, so I am not completely naive about the challenge seemingly simple things can be.
