A previous car I had (Mazda RX-7) made a low rumble with the a/c on at idle. It sounded like an exhaust pipe vibrating against the floor pan. This started not long after I had the a/c system recharged, and the compressor failed within a couple of months of this noise starting. I suspected at that time that the a/c had been overcharged, creating too much pressure in the compressor.
Soon after that, my dad bought a new 96 900T that started making that noise shortly after he bought it. I checked to make sure that it was the same a/c noise by turning the acc off, and confirmed that this was the same noise I had experienced in the Mazda. Despite my warnings, my dad ignorned the noise and had no a/c problems in the 3 years he had the car.
I suspect that this problem is caused by either a fault in the compressor or an overcharge in the refrigerant from the factory. I would try having the system evaporated and recharged with the correct amount of refrigerant and see if this solves the problem.
Good luck.
