the engine uses the o2 sensor and runs closed loop most of the time. Open loop (using the AMM or MAP sensor, depending on model, to determine air/fuel ratio) is used under high load, and probably at idle (most engine management systems open under idle condtions). Running closed loop, the mixture is at 14.7-1 (stoichiometric) which is optimal for emmisions and the cat converter. Under higher load, a richer mixture is required. The O2 sensor is a narrow band type (almost all are) designed for stoichiometric operation. The feedback system (closed loop) is also somewhat slow in operation. Under high load, the closed loop system can't respond quickly enough to maintain the proper A/F mixture. So if you are using larger injectors or a different Fuel pressure regulator, the O2 sensor will keep the mixture at 14.7-1. But when the system opens, the injectors and/or regulator will increase the amount of fuel injected. Also, most of the higher pressure regulators only increase fuel pressure at higher manifold pressures, and won't affect idle mixture.
