I haven't worked on my Saab wheels but I have restored a few sets of aluminum wheels in my day, both painted and polished. It takes a serious time commitment but you can get some really sweet looking results. I couldn't resist posting a before and after pic of a set of Pontiac 15x8" WS6 wheels I did a while back. The pic doesn't really do them justice, as that rim was almost mirror finished, but you get the idea. It sounds like your deep scratches would be impossible to remove so you really have to fill them. I don't really have any recommendations here, but I bet either a good epoxy or JB Weld could work great. The hardest part would be stripping the old paint off the damn things. You can get some pretty serious stuff at Walmart that will definetly burn your hands, just avoid the aerosol stuff, it's too weak. I think I used "Dad's" brand. The stronger stuff you can get the better. If you have an aviation fascility near you perhaps you could try to get some aircraft stripper. Ihe best thing about repainting Saab wheels will be actually having wheels and center caps that are the same color :)
Hope this helps,
Craig
