Upper engine Mount fix - good idea or bad idea?

Here is an inexpensive fix I did to reduce the stick shift movement considerably. After checking the lower mount (still seemed to be hanging in there) and noticing 1/4" cracks in the upper bushings; I figured why not beef up the uppers. I cut rubber strips out of old radiator hose and slipped them (with some effort) into the gaps in the rubber bushings. The result was a reduction in movement from one inch to about a quarter inch, and more vibration at idle transferred through the steering wheel. Vibration is minor, but am considering finding thinner strips to insert.
Any opinions on this being a bad thing to do????
FYI: a lot easier to insert if you remove the bushing bracket, and use silicone spray on the strip.
