Leaks can occur when the cleaning ability of the synthetic oil begins removing the sludge and varnish from 165k miles of fossil oil use. This gunk can actually mask the condition of deteriorated gaskets and seals, and when removed the faulty part is exposed, as is the oil as it drips onto your driveway. A car with healthy seals and gaskets should not have any leak problems.
Dick has it right that you should make your first change at 3k or so, but I would certainly do several quick changes at that interval, probably three or four. My Aero had 35k when purchased, having used fossil oil, and after one change at 3k and a lab analysis at 5k on the second there was still evidence that sludge was being absorbed by the new oil.
I am now on 10k change intervals after two previous changes with synthetic and all seems well, and no leaks.
