Doug, Aren't the engines all the same?
Pepped up, meaning a hotter cam?
I noticed with all of those automatic to manual conversions, the engines always seamed a bit smoother, and quieter. I always gathered it was due to the milder way of driving an automatic, and also the lower rpm switching ranges of the engines.
Despite the higher rpms on the highway, an automatic engine rarely sees 4000 rpms during normal driving.
My 86T engine was quiet and smooth like butter, before the timing chain popped due to an older style tensioner.
The automatic, actually had fine acceleration. It kept up light to light with the "faster speeders" with no problem. I actually was quite impressed, and will leave it automatic after I get the engine started. . Secondly, even on the highway doing 80 and 90, the engine was not loud or noisy.
