Depends on your frame of reference - it spins counter-clockwise viewed from the front of the car (which is the back of the engine - very confusing, in most cars you'd be looking at the front of the engine from the front of the car and, yes, it would be spinning clockwise). There are two ways you can confirm for yourself, the first is to look at the timing marks on the flywheel - since the numbers are "Degrees Before Top Dead Center", you will go from the higher numbers down to 0 when the crank is turning the correct direction. The second (easier for me to visualize, but you need to know what the inside of the engine looks like) is that the timing chain tensioner is always on the slack side of the chain. In the 99 it's on the left side of the car under the water pump and alternator. On the right side the chain runs straight down from the cam sprocket to the crank sprocket, so you know that is the side of the chain that's under tension.
Hope that helps!
Gary
