SAAB OFFERS TWO-, THREE-, FOUR- AND FIVE-DOOR COMBINATIONS FOR 1977 NEW EMISSIONS SYSTEM, NEW LIGHTS AND A FIVE-DOOR MODEL INTRODUCED

ORANGE, CONNECTICUT -- Two-, three-, four- and five-door Saabs will be available for 1977. Brand new in the line for 1977 is the five-door model, a roomy four door with an additional large rear hatch extending all the way down to the bumper.

In addition, the 1977 offerings from the Swedish automaker include new front parking lights and direction indicators which also in some models include a front mounted side guidance reversing light. On the two- and four-door models the rear lights have been redesigned to more than double the previous light area.

For cars sold in all West Coast states, as well as in the Rocky Mountain areas, a new emissions control system has been designed, incorporating an oxygen sensor and a three-way catalyst. The new "feedback' system called Lambda Control makes it possible for Saab to meet all requirements for 1977 -- and for some years to cone -- with comfortable margins. Totally new for the Saab line is the new five-door model, a further evolution of the Saab 99 GL three-door that was originally introduced under the name Saab WagonBack.

Total Versatility

With two more doors, this model now can offer its buyer total versatility in transportation .. a luxury sedan for normal week-day driving and the utility of a large rear opening, a full six-foot long cargo floor and easy loading capability, for those week-end chores that so often require extra carrying space.

The new front parking and turn signal light fittings incorporated on all 1977 Saabs include a 25 percent larger directional indicator area. Light intensity has been more than doubled thanks to a unique system of double optics. At the same time the risk from unwanted sunlight reflections through the lens has been eliminated through an internal screen which makes the rear light more visible.

For the Saab 99 GLE and EMS models another light feature is a side guidance reversing light built into the rear edge of the front/side lights. This extra back-up light, in combination with the regular mounted back-up lights, will greatly help backing especially in close quarters. On two- and four-door models the new, much larger rear combination lights give more effective lighting and visibility even in bright sunlight. The tail lights are also equipped with double bulbs for higher effectivity and reliability.

Two-Liter OHC Engine Powering the 1977 Saab 99 models are the same reliable 2-liter overhead camshaft engines that have been used since 1973, but with some important refinements:

Cars destined for the Eastern and Midwestern states are powered by the Saab B! 2OPR engine developing 115 horsepower (SAE net) and 123 ft. lbs. of torque. For 1977 the compression ratio in this engine has been increased to 9.25U and it is now equipped with a proportional Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system and a new type of exhaust pulse air injection system that does not require an air pump. The continuous fuel injection system is continued on all models with some refinements

Cars for all West Coast states and for the Rocky Mountain areas are powered by another version of the two-liter engine, BI 2OCA, that takes a totally new approach for both Saab and the auto industry in meeting the ever stringent emissions requirements especially in California.

This engine version is equipped with a three-way catalytic converter which besides oxidizing unburned hyrocarbons and carbon monoxide also reduces oxides of nitrogen. The 81 2OCA engine version retains the former 8.7:1 compression ratio. In order to maintain the correct air-to-fuel ratio needed for optimum combustion this engine uses continuous fuel injection with the unique Lambda system, which features an oxygen sensor mounted in the exhaust manifold, and which continuously reads the oxygen content in the exhaust and sends a signal to an electronic control unit. The control unit controls a pressure-regulating valve which in its turn maintains the correct ratio of air and fuel being fed to the injection system.

Cars with the Lambda system and the three-way catalyst develop 110 horsepower (SAE net) and 119 ft. lbs. torque. These cars must be run on unleaded gasoline.

100 Modifications A total of some 100 modifications, innovations and refinements have been incorporated into the 1977 Saab 99 models. Here are some of them:

* New, larger external rear view mirrors are mounted on all models.

* Larger trunk handles on two- and four-door models, for easier grip.

* Thinner profile radiator with improved cooling and durability.

* Three-way thermostat for the cooling system. For 1977, Saab will offer a total of four distinct models; and 12 model variations.

99 GL SEDAN - available in both two- and four-door versions and with manual and automatic transmissions. All automatic transmissions models are also equipped with power steering. 99 GL 3 and 5-DOOR - the best of two worlds. Roomy and luxurious sedan models for everyday use, easily converted into large, convenient load carriers for those special needs, Also available with either manual or automatic transmissions.

99 EMS - The sportiest Saab, with a Special Saab performance package including front air-dam, aluminum alloy wheels, Bilstein gas filled shock absorbers, quick steering ratio and a rally steering wheel. The EMS is available only as a two-door model with manual transmission. An optional sunroof is available. 99 GLE - The most luxurious Saab, available for 1977 with both automatic and manual transmissions, and featuring such extra luxury appointments as special trim and upholstery, electrically heated seats for both driver and front seat passengers, electrically controlled outside rear-view mirrors and gold accented aluminum alloy wheels. The OLE also can be ordered with a sunroof.

A number of new exterior colors -- with matching interiors -- have been added for 1977, for a total color choice of 10 distinct exterior colors.

New for 1977 on all GL models -- two-, three-, four- or five-door versions -are Astral Blue, Antelope Brown and Dorado Brown, which join the popular Coral White, Solar Red and Spring Green.

On the EMS model a new Cardinal Red Metallic color has been added to the Sterling Silver Metallic and Black.

And the GLE luxury models for 1977 will come in the new Anthracite Gray Metallic and Dorado Brown
