I'm not that ambitious. I don't want to take the tank out, but isn't all that crap just going to get sucked into the fuel pump again? I suspect that's the reason it failed.
I was planning on trying to clean up the bottom of the tank with a Harbor Freight transfer pump to siphon out the gas and crap at the bottom of the tank where the fuel pump pickup sits. Do you think that might suffice? I'm guessing the fuel pickup rubber disintegrated years ago, so the pump worked for years with the crap at the bottom of the tank. 3 years ago my car ran out of gas even though it was showing more than a quarter of a tank on the fuel gauge. I figured it was just a faulty/inaccurate fuel sender, but now I think the fuel pump was probably sucking air because the bottom 3 inches of the fuel pickup was missing.
