Recently when I replaced my original fuel pump I found someone selling the exact replacement on eBay by searching for the part number. It was a used one from a VW bus.
Back in the 90's I replaced a pump with a post connector version and didn't have an issue with the height of the inlet. Can you lower the pump in the tank by setting it lower in the upper rubber sleeve?
The spade connector type pumps are long long gone. All replacements were the post connector type.
