I agree with the comments to an extent, but the good news is that this group can help with most of the normal items that go wrong. A couple of thoughts:
- No Saab 99 is a good daily driver at this point. You will have reliability issues and it will take time to find parts.
- If you are not very mechanically inclined you need to have a trusted person to work on it who is experienced with 99s. Things like the fuel injection and water pump are not hard to sort out, but must have knowledge/experience. Doug knows all about the D-Jetronic fuel injection, and I have all the parts/tools/procedures for the water pump.
- Some mechanical parts are available new if you search around (I'm always impressed by how much stuff I can find at NAPA, Rock Auto, etc), but for many things and all body/trim/interior parts you will have to find used parts. Some things you will have to get made/reworked by specialists at this point (like brake hoses, caliper rebuilds, etc - look in Hemmings).
My experience is that with any car 40+ years old you will need to start out with probably $3,000 of tires, brakes, suspension, hoses, battery, tune-up, etc. etc. to make it safe and reasonably reliable no matter how good a condition it's in when you buy it.
With all those things in mind, if you find a 99 that runs and is not rusty then within those guidelines you should have a winner - it's a very cool car! You just need to be up for a certain amount of adventure.
Good luck, let us know what you decide! Gary
