Does "starting position" mean you are engaging the starter, which is turning the engine/distributor? You could measure a voltage difference to the primary (low voltage) side of the coil, but you won't necessarily see a spark arcing here.
It also depends on which ignition system you're working on -- the conventional/points or the electronic version. The electronic version energizes the coil through the number 15 terminal of the ignition amplifier and the coil (see the wiring diagram in my first post).
The traditional way to test for spark is to remove a spark plug, keep it connected to the plug wire, and hold it close to the block (or other ground point -- to test the block's own ground) while someone cranks the engine to look for a spark. It's the most basic test without having any other test gear.
If you suspect no positive voltage to the coil's primary, you would use a dwell meter or a test light.
You had a previously running engine that is no longer running. We need to stick to one of the conventional or electronic ignition systems at a time or it can get confusing lol.
Running through the troubleshooting procedure I posted (here http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/members/gallery.html?memberID=1819&do=show&id=35061 -- it actually says to check the high tension cable -- middle of the coil to middle of the distributor) WILL narrow it down to one of your components. I'm afraid, though, that some more advanced test gear is going to be necessary sooner rather than later.
