Being a 1980, is this a Lambda(oxygen sensor) car? If so, and if the lambda function stops working intermittently then you will get some significant driveability issues. Check that the modulator valve is buzzing when the fuel pump is running (it will buzz when you jumper the fuel pump relay as described). On many cars people have disconnected the oxygen sensor which force es the fuel trim to a neutral value, but if the Lambda system is not running at all I don't think you can make the car run well. If it is Lambda, let me know and I can offer more info on troubleshooting that.
