That's a very good idea. A clogged fuel return line will cause the engine to run lean (counterintuitive tho that may be). I'm not certain what could cause an intermittent problem there, maybe something that gets kinked when you hit a bump or something? Also, there's a check valve in the return line at the tank end (a 1980 car would have the plastic tank, so not 100% sure where it is, but on the metal-tank cars through 1979 it's above the rear axle right behind the right rear wheel.
