Dearest BAAB (kinda like SAAB, huh?),
I concur with my esteemed colleague Eric in Vermont--
There is only one person you need to please... and that's your wife. (Uh, ok you too)
The main thing you need to look at is what is your end purpose for the car?
1. Do you want a factory correct original to be a garage Queen and win best of show at the 2025 SAAB Owner's Convention?
2. Do you want a car for your young teenager to learn to drive?
3. Do you want reliable daily transportation for the commute from the 'Burbs?
4. Do you want to put a smack-down on the rice-burning-pubescent-teenagers-with-the-blue-neon-lights under their Honda or Mazda?
I have a couple Sonetts (69 and 71) along with a '72 96... all in various states of (dis-)repair.
My 69 Sonett has mild engine work, a 2bbl Weber DGV-5A, MSS Exhaust, Pertronix w/Bosch Blue coil, 8MM racing plug wires. I sport a chubby everytime I drive her. Her name is Little Miss (SAAB). Gets lots of thumbs up on the freeway
My 71 Sonett has very little engine work, a lightened flywheel, ARP flywheel bolts from a Pinto, a 1bbl Weber 34ICH carb, Y-extractor exhaust w/dual tip turbo chrome muffler, and the much sought after JP Alloy wheels (abarth style).... this car has been off the road for some years... but soon will be back.
It seems there's always some money that can, will, might or needs to be spent on my beloved V4 SAABs. My greatest gift is that my awesomely wonderful wife Lucy has grown to love the cars too! How lucky can a guy get??!!!
No matter what you decide--- be happy with your car! We all love our SAABs.
And you'll find much, muy, mucho knowledge with vendors (and SAAB lovers) like:
East Coast
Chip Lamb - West of Sweden
Jack Lawrence - Motorsport Services
West Coast:
Bud Clark - J & B Imports
Jack Ashcraft - Drakenparts
Great Folks!
R/ Mike
