Don,
Are you worried about the low pressure at hot idle?
It's bothered me a little bit, since my Sonett runs so high...or what I think would be more normal. Everyone I talk to say that 10 or 15 psi at hot idle is nothing to worry about. But I still do...
I've checked the compression and it's about 120 or 125 psi per cylinder. My balance shaft front bearing has discernable play in it, but not enough to do anything about yet. I get a slight puff of smoke on start up, but I know that's the valve stem seals. I have a vacuum gauge installed, and it says the engine is operating quite well. I don't think I burn much oil- it's down a bit every 1000, but there's also a leak I can't seem to fix around the driver's side front. I think the motor was rebuilt at some point in it's life, but who knows when... or how well. I took the car to the VSaab picnic in Hamilton NY a few weeks ago. 700 miles round trip in hot weather and the car ran great! Plenty of power with two people, no loss of oil upon return, and the guy with me (Nick) was impressed. I asked him about it and he said to not worry about it as long as it's positive at hot idle.
There was a discussion on this board a year or so ago. A guy had the same issue and was worried. At the time, I didn't have the pressure gauge in the 96, so all I could tell him was what the Sonett was reading, which again, seems normal to me. I think he finally decided it was okay and to put it out of his mind.
Anyone else have an oil pressure gauge installed on a stock motor to report on?
Thanks,
eric in vermont
