Hi Chris,
I can't speak for everyone, but here's my opinion:
1) Increased flow for higher HP motors.
2) Quicker startup if the fuel in the bowl evaporates.
3) Coolness factor.
I have an electric pump in one of my Sonetts, as it has a Jack Lawrence motor. It was installed for reason #1 above.
One of my 96's came with an electric fuel pump under the rear seat. It was a generic pump that delivered the correct pressure. It failed a year after I got the car. I still don't know why. Just one day- it quit- no more buzz. Could have been junk in the tank, although there was a fuel filter before it. And I was stranded. Never had a mechanical pump fail like that in 35 years of VSaabs.
In addition, you need to think about the electric fuel pump safety issue, as pointed out in the previous thread. If someone has done something, it's having it run off the oil pressure switch, with the button for priming. The module that Kansas found looks like a great improvement over that!
So, what to do? For me, I think the good ole mechanical pump works just fine for most applications. Run the electric pump if you have a built motor.
