>>I don't have a way to separately disconnect the condensor
I believe the condenser is held to the outside of the distributor body with a single screw. That is not only the physical mounting of the condenser but also the ground side electrical connection for it. If you remove the screw and position the condenser so it is not touching anything, the condenser is disconnected electrically just as thoroughly as if you clipped the wire and threw it across the room. If disconnecting it in that way restores voltage, the condenser is shorted. If that is the case, for added assurance, remove the condenser from the car and hold it between your thumb and forefinger above a trash can. Separate thumb and forefinger. Does it fall in? Then it was shorted. Leave it there.
>>but I suspect points because the voltage returns randomly as the points >>are shifted around. All of this done with open points.
I do not understand "points are shifted around." The contacts are being held separated by insulating matter (eg business card corner), right? What are you doing in this process to "shift them around?"
If voltage is not restored when the condenser is separated as above, something else is shorted to ground. I will look at my car to see how this is set up on the Saab, it is so long since I have messed with it that I don't remember exactly. Back tomorrow.
