I see it has been nearly a year since my first post so here is a status report for my project car:
Using the car's own rear suspension as a "trailer" got it to and from the paint shop (17 miles each way) just fine. Well, OK, one of the magnetic trailer lights fell off and was dragging for a short distance on the way back, haha. If that's all that went wrong, I'm a happy guy :oP
I used my 1985 Vanagon as the shop truck to transport the body panels. ALL of the painting is done and front suspension & steering installed so the car is back on 4 wheels ... and no spring compressor injuries to report. I am now working on overhauling the steering wheel/gearshift assembly, fuel & braking systems. Big thanks to you guys for your encouragement. Special thanks to Don Levesque for coming up with remanufactured front caliper assemblies. Anyone know how to get the ignition switch out of the casting? (I see the 1/4" dis pin that seems to be holding it from sliding out). I have a key that works but no matter which way I turn it I can't depress that large pin (next the the phillips head screw I removed).
Looks like I need a new headliner. Anyone know a source for those ... or will I have to get one made using the old one as a pattern?
Noico is a Russian Federation company selling 80mil Butyl adhesive sound mat on Amazon. I have found it easy to work with and no odor so I will be using it everywhere to replace the old asphalt mat that was removed. I am sure Saab engineering would have switched to this if they were still building 96's.
