Tom,
I buy Pennzoil Marine Synthetic "Blend" oil from Amazon, based on reviews and price ($18/gallon, with free shipping if you have PRIME). I initially bought 2 gallons, then when I am down to one full gallon, I purchase another (a handy feature of free shipping!).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C43BOTM/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00C43BOTM&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork

I use a short bungee to literally suspend the gallon container from the trunk hinge so that I don't have to worry about it tipping and spelling.

Then I purchased, again from Amazon, a "Seadog Mixing Bottle" for $9. It is made of plastic and has multiple scales marked in gallons for various mixing ratios. The bottle has more than enough capacity to top up an empty tank:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R4U2FM/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000R4U2FM&linkCode=as2&tag=thesaabnetwork (Note: reviews for the cheaper "Shoreline" bottle on Amazon indicate the scale on the side is grossly inaccurate.

With the measuring bottle, I don't have to wait until the tank is nearly empty to refill. Just pull in anytime, fill the tank, note gallons entered, and select the correct oil quantity on the scale on the bottle. I do this before "hanging up" the gas nozzle, so that afterwards, I squirt a bit more fuel in my bottle to rinse it, dump the remaining fuel from the bottle into my tank, and I am good to go.

Leaving the gas station, I yank the steering from side to side a couple of times to help mix the fuel/oil in the tank.

Yes, I am using the 50:1 scale, sometimes even a little less oil, and have had trouble-free operation for some 2 years.

I do use premium fuel, which seems to be the recommended choice, although sometimes I do question the need for that, but.. if I need to spend a few extra bucks at the pump to insure against pinging, I don't mind. After all, I don't plan on driving my baby across country. Most of my trips are in the 20 miles or less category.
