Girling clutch master piston removal

Does anybody have any suggestions/tricks for removing the piston from the Girling (re: '67 96 2 stroke) clutch master cylinder? The books I have indicate that once the c-clip and associated hardware is removed, the piston should simply slide right out of the bore...which is not what's happening at this time.
