While the "70" 1967 Sonett V4's did have the 1500cc open deck engines and a modified bonnet. They also have many changes in the location and wiring of many components than the earlier 3 cylinder cars. I would say they were reconfigured before shipment to the US. The return for retrofitting would have been cost prohibitive. I am no expert, but a fire sale would have been cheaper to sell the remaining 67 3 cylinders if needed.
