To update this six year old thread.
I got a 1971 Saab 96 recently. Took it for a ride and it said it had about 1/3 of tank of gas. It was running fine and then made some noise and stalled out. I restarted it by popping the clutch but wondered what had happened. A few minutes later it stalled out again and this time, we said it's out of gas ... and it was.
So I must have a sender unit issue BUT I will record the mileage when I fill it up and track gas usage and levels that way.
