It seems like you have a very tricky problem. You mentioned that the car overheated at some stage. I did the same thing on my 99turbo (never totally overheated, but enough to almost start boiling) and twice after a couple of months after overheating I ended up with a cracked head. The symptoms of a cracked head will vary depending on where the head cracked. In my case the only sure sign was a little water in the exhaust, or the engine trying not turning over very well when starting cold (due to the pistons trying to compress a combustion chamber full of water). The second time I cracked the head the symptoms were subtle with the only problem being a loss of coolant over a week or so and running rough when cold.
I'm not sure how a cracked head will cause the problems you are describing, but it might be worth checking out if the engine had got hot at some stage.
Best of luck
Justin
