So Gary, how did the trip go? I thought of one other thing that hasn't been covered so far: Make sure the bypass hose is still on your cooling system. (It runs from the thermostat housing down to the water pump; its function is to "bypass" the radiator when the thermostat is closed.)
A lot of people take it off because they think it makes no difference -- and in theory, it doesn't once the thermostat opens. In practice, though, the thermostat restricts coolant flow somewhat even when fully opened, and if the bypass hose is gone the excess just backs up behind the 'stat and accumulates more heat. My V4-powered Sonett, when acquired, was minus its bypass hose, and I found it ran significantly cooler once I put the hose back on.
