The same configuration of the B-engine was used on the late 99's and early 900's. Bottom end on a B-engine is almost indestructable. The heads are the biggest problem as they are prone to cracking around the #2 and #3 exhaust ports (so are the later H heads). What actually happens is that when the car runs hot, the antifreeze boils around these two ports (the hottest part of the head) and the water jacket erodes from the inside into the combustion chamber. Do a cooling system pressure check, a compression check and a cooling system combustion gas contamination check. (There is a kit available from parts stores that has a fluid in it that will change color if exhaust gasses are present.) These three tests should give you an indication of the condition of the cylinder head.
The 5-speed transmissions in the '80 thru '88 900's isn't as reliable as the late 4-speeds in the 99's and '79 900. Listen very carefully for whining noises from the transmission as well as difficult shifting. (Even good transmissions have been criticized as having rather notchy shifting.) The very costly failure in these transmissions is that the pinion shaft bearings are prone to failure and when they finally let go, most of the insides of the transmission are junk. If caught early, the repair bill mainly invloves new bearings, synchros and seals. As the failure progresses gears are damaged, if not the case itself. My sister just junked a '85 because of catastrophic transmission failure.
other than those things, I would recommend that a reliable mechanic that knows SAABs look at it.
