An alternative to using a 5-speed is to retro fit the 4 speed with the 31/26 sprocket set. (The standard turbo set is 30/27.) This reduces the engine speed about 220 rpm in 4th. Replacement is simple and can be done with the engine in the car. Replace as a complete set of sprockets, chains, and tensioner. Chains are different lenghts depending on ratios. The tensioner is also different. The 32/25 ratio is not practical since it would be like starting off in 2nd gear. The 31/26 ratio has little noticable difference during start off. This change is better than the 5 speed retro fit because it's simple. After rebuilding 4 5-speeds, I'm beginning to hate them. Just the 4 speed with a cobbled up extra gear thrown in. The early ones had waffer thin aluminium bearing carriers that would crack and cause major bearing failures. The 4 speed ones were solid cast iron. The spring loaded shifter still bothers me. I guess if car companies offered 8 speeds people would want that too. Enough grumbling. Have fun.
